Espace de créations et de productions architecturales, urbanistiques et culturelles, L'Escaut est un lieu où la place de l'homme et le regard porté sur son existence, dans son vécu quotidien comme dans ses représentations, sont au centre des préoccupations.

Les projets se formulent au travers de pratiques diverses. Au sein de l'atelier, l'équipe d'architectes cohabite avec des acteurs des arts vivants (comédiens, metteurs en scène, scénographes, réalisateurs...). Cette pluridisciplinarité est nourrie par une dimension d'accueil et partage des savoirs autant que des plaisirs. Préparer un repas est aussi important que mener une réunion de coordination ou une recherche technique.

Sur le terrain, l'engagement de L'Escaut se concrétise au travers de divers niveaux de participation citoyenne (de la consultation à l'appropriation, en passant par les ateliers d'architecture, les concertations, etc.) Une recherche anthropologique menée par des spécialistes, de même qu'une approche territoriale développée par des paysagistes, viennent souvent en appui des compétences architecturales et urbanistiques de l'atelier. L'engagement se traduit également dans la dimension scénographique des projets, qui signifie une appréhension très physique du métier.

Les formes spatiales résultant de ces pratiques sont diverses et spécifiques suivant les contextes et processus qui les ont conditionnées. Quelques récurrences néanmoins: un maximum d'effet avec un minimum de moyens, dans une conscience politique, sociale et écologique; une recherche pour la légèreté soulageant l'investissement en temps et énergie du projet.

Cette démarche nécessitant une expérimentation permanente, débouche sur des matérialisations à forte personnalité. Elle est appréciée tant par les institutions publiques que les clients privés.

L'Escaut est une scrl comptant 16 associés, dont 3 administrateurs.
Des partenaires occasionnels ou récurrents s’ajoutent à l’équipe suivant les projets: ingénieurs, paysagistes, urbanistes, artistes, etc.
L’Escaut a été fondé en 1989 par Olivier Bastin, architecte-scénographe, et Micheline Hardy comédienne-metteur en scène-scénariste-réalisatrice.

Als ruimte voor creaties en architecturale, stedenbouwkundige en culturele producties, is L’Escaut een plek waar de plaats van de mens en de blik op zijn bestaan, zowel in het dagelijkse leven, als in zijn representaties, centraal staan.

De projecten ontstaan vanuit verschillende praktijken. Binnen het atelier woont het team van architecten samen met artiesten uit de levende kunsten (acteurs, regisseurs, scenografen, filmmakers...). Deze multidisciplinariteit wordt gevoed door de dimensie van het onthaal en door de uitwisseling van zowel kennis als plezier. Een maaltijd bereiden is even belangrijk als een coördinatievergadering of een technisch onderzoek.

Op het terrein krijgt het engagement van L’Escaut vorm door verschillende niveau's van participatie (van raadplegingen tot toe-eigening, via architectuurateliers, overlegmomenten, enz). Een antropologisch onderzoek evenals een territoriale studie ondersteunen vaak de architecturale en stedenbouwkundige competenties van het atelier. Het engagement komt ook tot uiting in de scenografische dimensie van de projecten, hetgeen een sterke fysische benadering van het beroep inhoudt.

De ruimtelijke vormen die daarvan het resultaat zijn, zijn divers en specifiek al naargelang de context en het proces. Enkele terugkerende kenmerken zijn : een maximum effect met een minimum aan middelen, en met een politiek, sociaal en ecologisch bewustzijn; een zoeken naar lichtheid, die de tijd en de energie die aan het project worden besteed, verzachten.

Deze benaderingswijze noodzaakt een voortdurend experiment en resulteert in realisaties met een sterke persoonlijkheid. Deze worden zowel door de publieke instellingen gewaardeerd als particuliere klanten.

Afhankelijk van de aard van de opdrachten, werkt het team samen met verschillende partners zoals ingenieurs, landschapsarchitecten, stedenbouwkundigen, antropologen, kunstenaars, ....

The projects are formulated through various practices. Within the studio, the team of architects works with people from the performing and fine arts (actors, directors, theatre designers, producers, etc.). This interdisciplinary approach is nourished by a dimension of openness and sharing knowledge as well as pleasure. Preparing a meal is as important as carrying out a coordination meeting or technical research.

In the field, l'Escaut’s commitment is expressed in concrete terms through various levels of citizen participation (from consultation to appropriation, and including architecture workshops, dialogues, etc.). Anthropological research carried out by specialists, as well as a territorial approach developed by landscape architects, often back up the architectural and urban planning skills of the studio. Their commitment is also expressed in the staging dimension of the projects, which signifies a very physical understanding of their profession.

The spatial forms resulting from these practices are varied and specific according to the contexts and processes that have conditioned them. A few recurrences nonetheless: the maximum effect with the minimum means, with political, social and ecological awareness; a search for lightness relieving the investment in the project as measured in time and energy.

This approach requires continuous experimentation, and leads to concrete expressions with a strong personality. It is valued both by public institutions and by private clients.
