The Museum of Photography: phase 2

The stables are the oldest building of the Carmelite Convent. They were used by the farm on which the convent was built in 1874. Throughout the last century, the buidling has fulfilled a number of uses, and it has undergone transformations accordingly: a house for the concierge, office space, stocks... When the museum decided to make a residence for artists, the main space had been divided unwisely, and was being used as a storage space for archives.
The project focused on two angles: opening up the main rooms to their original spaciousness, and providing functional flexibility whilst showcasing the existing complexity of the building and its dilating spaces, with a halfway floor that used to be a dovecote, and a partly buried water tank. The building, although small in size, remains complex. Zones on different levels, and spaces with particular proportions bring in an "Alice in Wonderland" dimension.
